Practical car detailing guides for UK drivers
If you know the job but the product choice is holding you up, start here. These are useful starting points with a reason behind each one. Use the linked guide to check the details that could change the choice for your car.
| Job | My starting choice | Why it earns its place |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss-paint maintenance wash | Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner | A maintenance shampoo with a measured dose and low-foam behaviour |
| Contact washing | MR.SIGA mitt | Easy control around awkward edges |
| Drying | CarMax drying towel | Useful broad towel area, with smaller cloths for the details |
| Pre-wash | Polar Blast | An even covering through a compatible lance before the mitt stage |
If you need containers too, the two-bucket kit includes a mitt. Check that before doubling up. The complete kit guide explains clean spares, storage and the rest of the session.
For suitable wheels with brake dust and road grime, Custom Wheel Cleaner is my first starting point. Match the finish first, then use a Supreme wheel brush where the head fits freely. The clearance guide shows what to measure.
Instant Tyre Dressing gives a neater finish in a thin coat. For compatible unpainted trim, Bumper & Trim Gel makes the smaller details look more consistent. Their separate tyre and trim guides explain the preparation.
Interior Shampoo is useful for compatible trim and fabric; Autoglym Leather Cleaner suits its supported leather surfaces. Inspect both after the cleaned area has dried.
For regular dry debris, the Go Vac Pro has been handy at seams and footwell edges. Choose an extractor separately when washing suitable upholstery is the missing function.
For glass, I’d start with Fast Glass and dedicated cleaning and dry finishing cloths. Keep the screen on its own care method.
| Need | Product to consider | Read before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Tar deposits | Intensive Tar Remover | Targeted tar removal |
| Iron contamination | Magma | Whether treatment is needed |
| Bonded roughness | Autoglym clay kit | A small preparation test |
| Light finish improvement | Super Resin Polish | Controlled hand polishing |
| Straightforward spray finish | Rapid Ceramic Spray | Wet or dry application |
| A deliberate wax routine | Collinite 845 | Choosing the finishing route |
Matte paint, Alcantara, fabric roofs and displays need their own product routes. Use the guide directory to choose the surface-specific answer rather than stretching a general recommendation to fit everything.
Before choosing a product, you can also check the surface in the Detailing Garage. Select the actual material and problem to see the method and product restrictions for that job.
Buy for the next complete job: the right product, tools that reach, clean cloths and enough time to finish. That is the combination that makes the recommendation useful.
