How to Clean Car Glass Without Chasing Streaks

Glass can look spotless on the driveway and turn hazy the moment the light changes. Usually, the answer is to separate cleaning from the final dry wipe and inspect each side deliberately. You don’t need to keep spraying the same pane until the cloth is soaked.
Start with clean glass cloths
Use cloths reserved for glass, kept away from dressing and wax residue. Have one for cleaning and another dry cloth for finishing. If either starts moving film around, change it rather than trying to polish the same residue away indefinitely.
Fast Glass has worked well for me on smeared windows. The wiper sweep and upper edges were the useful places to check after wiping; a straight-on look at the centre of the pane missed some remaining haze.
Clean the exterior first
Wash away grit and loose dirt before the glass-cleaning stage. Work on cool panes out of strong sun. Apply the cleaner using its method, spread over a manageable area and wipe away the loosened film.
Finish with the separate dry cloth, including corners and the edge beside the seals. Lower side windows slightly where appropriate to reach the upper strip, clean and dry it, then close the window to finish the rest.
Work the interior in reachable sections
Put cleaner on the cloth where that gives controlled application around trim and electronics. Reach the lower windscreen in smaller areas instead of stretching one over-wet cloth across the whole pane.
Choose a direction for the final passes, then use a different direction on the opposite side. If a streak remains, its orientation can help you find which face still needs work. It’s a simple way to stop cleaning the wrong side three times.
Check from the driving position
Look through the windscreen and across it in angled daylight. Check the lower corners, wiper sweep and areas near mirrors. Work on any remaining film with a fresh cloth face and a controlled amount of cleaner.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Broad haze after wiping | Product residue or a loaded cloth |
| Narrow repeating streaks | Final wiping direction and cloth cleanliness |
| Marks following the wiper sweep | Glass contamination and blade condition |
| Fixed spots unchanged by ordinary cleaning | A separate deposit or surface issue |
Keep tint, coatings and screens on their own methods
Follow the care requirements for fitted film and glass coatings. A cleaner suitable for ordinary windows may need a different approach on a specialist surface. Rear-window heating elements deserve light, controlled wiping.
Use the touchscreen method for the display. A bottle that helps the windscreen is not automatically the right product for its coating.
If the glass is now clear, stop adding cleaner. Keep the dry finishing cloth clean for the remaining panes, then wash the cloths separately from oily jobs. For choosing the bottle and cloth setup, see the glass-cleaner buying guide.
