A fabric roof can look patchy when traffic film builds up, even while the rest of the car is clean. Give the hood its own cleaning and protection routine, with enough time for thorough rinsing and drying. The finish is much easier to judge once the fabric has dried.
Confirm the roof material and condition
Identify fabric or canvas versus vinyl, then check the roof maker’s care instructions. Inspect seams, window edges and the fabric for wear or damage. Remove loose debris gently before introducing cleaner.
For compatible fabric hoods, the Autoglym Soft Top Clean & Protect kit is a useful system for removing road film and restoring a more even appearance. Judge the fabric after cleaning and drying, especially where the finish looked patchy.
Set up the job around the roof
Close the roof fully and work out of direct sun. Have the kit’s applicators, low-pressure rinse water and cloths for neighbouring glass and paint ready. Keep runoff and stray product under control throughout.
Allow time for the full system. Cleaning and proofing have different moisture requirements, so decide the sequence before starting rather than assuming the hood must be bone dry at every stage.
Clean in a controlled sequence
Remove loose dirt with the suitable brush and vacuum method. For the current kit, dampen the hood, mix 250ml cleaner with 500ml water and work with the supplied white cleaning sponge. Test an inconspicuous area for colourfastness first.
Work the cleaner evenly across the fabric, giving stained or green areas the treatment specified by the system. Clear product runs from surrounding paint and glass as you go. Use the kit’s intended applicator rather than treating the hood like a painted panel.

Give rinsing enough time
Rinse with low-pressure water until the cleaner is fully removed, including around seams. Residual cleaner can affect the following protection stage. Keep checking runoff and the fabric rather than declaring it finished after one quick pass.
Avoid a pressure-washer jet on the hood. The cleaning task is removing soil and cleaner from the fabric while preserving the roof’s construction.
Apply this protector to the cleaned, damp hood
The Autoglym system specifies a damp roof for its protection stage. Dampen the blue protector applicator and spread roughly half the protector bottle evenly across the fabric, following the current kit’s directions. Remove stray product from neighbouring surfaces promptly.
Then let the protector dry fully before driving or exposing the hood to moisture. Keep the roof in the position required by the vehicle’s folding guidance while it dries.
Judge the appearance at the right time
Inspect colour and texture after drying. Damp fabric can look darker and hide unevenness. Look across the whole roof, including the boundaries between exposed areas and folds, before deciding another treatment is needed.
Between full treatments, remove loose debris and follow the roof’s regular care routine. Use the bodywork wash for the rest of the car and keep the hood’s cleaning products, applicators and sequence distinct. A thorough rinse and the correct moisture stage make this a much more predictable job.
